What are ticks?
Ticks are tiny parasitic bugs related to spiders and mites. There are over 900 tick species. They live all over the world, especially in warm humid areas. They have eight legs and rounded bodies. These creepy crawlies come in different sizes. Most are very small, between 3 to 5 mm long. That’s about the size of a peppercorn or apple seed. There are two main families, hard and soft ticks.
Tick bites animals and people to feed on blood. This is how they survive and grow. They use their sharp mouthparts to pierce the skin. They go through four life stages, egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Soft ticks can have up to 7 nymph cycles, each needing a blood meal.
The oldest tick fossils are about 100 million years old, so they have been critters for a very long time!
Common species of tick in South Australia:
- Brown dog ticks
- Paralysis ticks
- Bush ticks
- Cattle ticks
The Risks
Ticks find hosts by sensing body heat, odor, moisture and vibration. When they latch on, they ingest blood for 4-7 days before dropping off.
Their bites can cause allergic reactions and spread many harmful illnesses like Lyme disease. They can also cause anemia and tick paralysis which can be fatal. This makes tick control very important.
