What are Mosquitoes?
Mosquitoes are small insects, about 3-6 mm long, in the fly group Culicidae. Females have an elongated, piercing mouthpart called a proboscis used to draw blood from humans and animals. This is needed to get protein and iron to produce eggs.
Only female mosquitoes bite. They use chemicals, visual cues, and heat sensors to find a blood vessel, pierce skin with their proboscis, and inject saliva while feeding. This causes an immune response leading to itchy, swollen bites.
Some mosquitoes can transmit dangerous diseases like malaria, yellow fever, West Nile, encephalitis, and the Zika virus.
These pests breed by laying eggs directly into standing water sources like creeks, ponds, storm drains, wetlands, buckets, old tires, etc.
They go through four distinct life cycles during their development:
- Egg – Females lay eggs one at a time, sometimes up to 1 million over the years! The eggs float on the surface of stagnant water.
- Larva – After hatching, larvae called “wigglers”, feeding on organic matter. They molt and grow for 5-14 days.
- Pupa – The larva transforms into an aquatic pupa that doesn’t eat. At this stage, they develop into their adult form.
- Adult – The newly emerged adult mosquitoes rest before taking flight.
These buzzing insects are most active at dusk and dawn. They prefer damp, dark environments with vegetation to rest in during the day, like trees, plant, shrubs, and grassy areas.

How to Prevent
- Remove standing water – Empty buckets, toys, tires, and other items.
- Use fans – They have trouble flying against strong winds, so use fans to keep them away.
- Apply repellent – Use an effective mosquito repellent like DEET or picaridin when outdoors.
- Install screens – Make sure windows and doors have tight-fitting screens to keep mosquitoes out.
- Try traps – This can help reduce populations on your property.

Electric Mosquito Killer
Bug zappers can help control mosquitoes in your backyard by attracting and killing them with ultraviolet light, heat and octenol. They are drawn in and electrocuted by charged metal grids inside.
Put these traps 20-40 feet from outdoor living areas where mosquitoes gather. Clean out dead critters regularly to maintain success.
While they kill some of them, these aren’t fully effective for infestations. Contact us to create a mosquito control plan using pro treatments for long-lasting relief.
